This week Google launched Google Instant a revolution in the way the search engine provides results. Google Instant displays results as you type taking their predictive search query a step further. The reason this update is having such an impact is because the new feature is sure to have an impact on website owners.

Google Instant uses previous browsing behaviour to display results which are more relevant to you; this is something Google has been doing for a while. You can opt out of Google Instant if you don't like it, simply click the instant is on text next to the search field into the off position.

There has been much talk that Google favours brands and this latest feature sure goes towards proving this. If you type one letter in you get popular brands for example if I type in the letter E I get of course eBay, F returns Facebook and Y gives me YouTube. Google is making a really big assumption with one letter that these well known brands are what I am looking for.

Google Instant is meant to save everyone a great deal of time approximately 3.5 billion seconds every day. With time something we all need more of surely Google are doing us a favour? Although Google Instant is going to change things it is important to note Google will still use the same ranking factors to place your website in its index for your chosen words.

It is still important you follow all the guidelines and make sure your website is search engine friendly. Continue as you did before building links and creating relevant, unique content. The only thing you may change is the way you do your keyword research. Where as previously you may have chosen phrases to optimise for, predictive search may not allow your user to type in the whole search term before they see a site they want to visit. This means you may want to start optimising your site for one and two word terms.

One and two word terms are much more competitive and will make SEO even more competitive than previously so now more than ever it is important you do everything you can to ensure your website ranks well.

If you are working with an SEO agency ask them how they are going to deal with instant search do they have a new strategy. If the answer is we are going to wait and see then you could miss out. Some people believe instant search is the end of SEO, it is not it is just a strategy changer.

Tips for Google Instant

*As results are going to be tailored to you local search will become more important
*Keep a close eye on your AdWords account to see if the change impacts the impressions and quality score
*Do checks on what searches appear as you begin to type your target keywords and optimise for those
