There are many different ways of making money with a website. You can sell advertising, sell your own products or services, sell as an affiliate, and so on. While each of the different business models has its own techniques and methods that make it more successful, there is one secret that all money making websites share, and that is traffic.

Actually, that isn't the whole secret. The whole secret is that they get targeted traffic. That is, the traffic that they get wants what they have to offer. That is the biggest secret when it comes to making money on the internet, or anywhere else for that matter.

As an example, if someone were searching for rubber chickens, and I had a site all about raising chickens in your backyard, do you think they'd be interested? After all, they are both about chickens, right? Wrong! These two topics couldn't be further from one another in the mind of your visitor, so when he sees that you don't have any rubber chickens, he's going to hit the back button.

But what if your site was actually all about rubber chickens? If you had several varieties available for sale, and you also offered some tips for using them in comedy routines or for gags around the home and office, do you think he might be interested? I'd say it's very likely. He might even buy more than one because of the great information you gave him about the differences and the best uses for each kind.

However, the differences aren't always as obvious as this. Sometimes a keyword you are targeting in your marketing efforts seems to make perfect sense, but doesn't really fit. You might be targeting a keyword like "breakup" for your site about getting over a relationship, only to find out that most of the traffic is looking for a movie with that title.

The way you avoid this is by doing some research on your market before you start targeting specific keywords. Do a search for the keyword and look at what the top ten results lead you to. Find out what keywords are relevant to your competitors websites by using a tool like Google's Keyword Tool. By doing this before you start targeting keywords, you will be less likely to go after irrelevant ones.

After that, you can track your website statistics to see what keywords are bringing you the most traffic, and which ones have the highest bounce rate. By tracking these types of statistics, you can get even more valuable information about what your potential customers are really searching for. And with that knowledge you'll be able to get more targeted traffic, which is what its all about.

So remember, the only real, true secret that all money making websites share is that they have enough highly targeted traffic to make money. If you can't get that, you're going nowhere.
