A blog is an important advertising and marketing tool in the hands of any business. It doesn’t matter if you are a big or a small business, if you aren’t blogging, you are losing out on potential traffic and customers. A blog is a medium by which you can reach out and speak to your target audience about business related issues, promotional offers and reviews about your products and services.

A small business especially gains from a blog as it is an inexpensive way of marketing your business. This is especially useful if you don’t have too big a marketing and advertising budget. By regularly updating your small business blog you keep your readers interested, generate interest about your business and also help increase your website’s search engine rankings.

Here are the top reasons why you need a small business blog:

  • Setting up a small business blog is cheap and inexpensive and you don’t need to be technologically savvy to use your blog. You could opt to use a free blogging site or create a blog for your own business website. The latter option is a better idea
  • Your blog is a great way to create a niche for your business. It is a good way to create a brand identity and maintain it.
  • A blog allows you to tell your customers that you are an authority when it comes to your business and related issues.
  • One of the biggest advantages of a blog is that you can choose the topic and set the tone of the blog. Some blogs may be serious in nature and discuss changes and developments in the economy and the impact on small businesses. While others may be more fun and discuss the promotional offers and discounts offered by your business.
  • The manner in which your blog is written allows you to reach out to a larger audience as you choose topics that interest them and relate it to your business.
  • This is your chance to reach out and interact with your customers and get a chance to know their views and opinions. Your small business blog can give you insight into your customer’s attitudes regarding your business and the products or services you sell. It may also help improve and refine your customer service and marketing techniques.
  • Your blog is a good way of identifying your target audience by studying the demographics of your traffic. Often a marketing strategy may be ineffective simply because the target audience is misidentified and choice of marketing strategy is not apt.

By setting up a blog and regularly updating it you are also improving your reach with the search engines. The search engines, specifically the larger ones such as google, Yahoo and MSN Live, are thirsting for new and fresh content. So once your blog is set up, it is important that you regularly write articles so that your readers and the search engine spiders/crawlers have something to look forward to.Trust me on this, the search engines eat up fresh content!

As you get accustomed to writing for your blog, you may also discover other ways of using it to generate interest in your business.
