Now that you are a proud owner of a great looking web site it's time to know some of the basic factors which would ensure the success and popularity of your website.

The first step towards ensuring the success of your web site is to keep the content updated. Always keep your content pages populated with current news and updates. It is good to update your pages in a frequency of once in every month or two at a minimum. It is extremely frustrating for the customer to visit the web site and see the same old content repeatedly. Remember, every time visitors come to your website, they expect something new that would add value to their time and interest of visiting. They would come back only if they know that there is something interesting for them and they could utilize their time in a profitable way.

Old stale content will make your web site look dead and dull. Fresh updated content, changing from time to time, would also prove to be search engine friendly and give your web site a better ranking. Low search engine rankings with old content will affect the popularity and number of visitors to your website. Also keep in mind that the information you are providing in the web site should have something of value for the reader. The readers would then come back with the confidence that they will get something new as well as useful to know and could be of good relevance to them, be it knowledge wise or monetarily. Fresh content will help make your web site a destination. A destination that your visitors will want to frequent in the future.

There are a lot of things which you can update in frequent intervals. New product launches, site or niche related news, discount prices, special offers, any special event that was held by or for your company along with any upcoming events, bright and catchy images, your latest awards or achievements etc. are some of the things which you can update monthly or bi-monthly. Allow your visitors to post their comments, feedback and suggestions of how you can improve your web site or if there is anything specific about any product that they would like to know.

You can use notepad, MS Word, an HTML editor. However, you need to have a bit of programming knowledge to use such advanced software. Or you can use a web site CMS (Content Management System) to update or modify your website. Another method is to start and run a web log (blog) where you are discussing the topic of your web site on a regular basis.

Before you update your web site it is good to make a plan and follow it. Keep your update plans ready for the next 3 to 6 months so that you are not in trouble thinking what to update when the interval period is over. This would keep the interest of your visitors intact and bring them to find out what is new and what is going to be new next!

There are several web services that allow you to add updated news feeds to your web site. These news feeds work best if they are on the same subject as your web site. It would not be appropriate to have a web site selling ebooks about collecting Old Time Radio (OTR) Shows and have news feeds providing news about PHP programming.

As mentioned above having fresh content will also help you with your search engine rankings. Having a subject related news feed will show the search engines that your pages have continually updated information on your web site and is not a stale web site. There are already millions of web pages that were written once and have not changed in years. Don't let your site become one of these.

I also mentioned above the importance of allowing visitors to post their comments, feedback and suggestions to your web site. What I mean here is to allow your visitors to add content on your web site. Using your visitors to assist you in adding new and fresh content your web site is a great way to keep your content updated without you having to do anything other than observe and insure their added information is relevant.

A good and consistent web site is the best way to earn the trust and confidence of your virtual visitors who could turn out to be your best customers in the future.

Also, while you are updating your web site ensure that all the links (if any) provided in the web site are working. Broken links would surely annoy the user and drive them away immediately.
