The purpose of any online business is to generate maximum interest amongst its target audience and increase its sales and revenue. To this end every online business needs to focus on ways of communicating effectively with their target audience and find better ways to approach them. Usually a customer or prospective customer would have to visit your site or an affiliate's site to gain access to company and product information. However with RSS feeds your customers can get the latest news from your company without even visiting your web site.

What is RSS?

RSS is a XML file format for syndicating content and news in the web. It is usually used by websites that constantly need to update their content regularly such as news websites (CNN, BBC and Reuters) and Blogs (weblogs). Since it essentially gives one's web page more traffic, it is now more widely used in marketing and web publications. Today, large and small websites alike are usually RSS-enabled.

Advantages of RSS Feeds to Your Online Business

RSS or Really Simple Syndication is a technology that allows you to supply your customers with the latest news simply by being online. RSS feeds can be used to create awareness amongst your target audience, build a brand image and associate your business with certain values it holds dear.

By providing regular news feeds to your customers you will help them stay in contact with your company as well as your products. And the chances are that whenever they are considering a related product or service they will think of you.

If you have an affiliate program then you can ensure that your company's latest news and developments appear on the affiliate site and is updated regularly. This will help the site attain higher ranking in search engine results and also bring your company information into the limelight. This also makes it easier to keep a control of the information about your company that is available on the affiliate site.

Rather than trying to communicate with your customers through e-mail, which may be reported as spam or even ignored, RSS feeds gives you a medium of directly communicating with your customers. Every time your customers are online the newsreader software seeks out the RSS feeds and updates the available news.

By using certain keywords for your RSS feeds and submitting these to RSS directories you can also increase the number of people who will want to subscribe to your RSS feeds. For instance, if you sell kitchen ware then you may consider adding cooking as a keyword for your RSS feeds. When an internet users uses this search word on a search engine your RSS feeds may feature in the search results, and more and more may want to subscribe to your RSS feeds.

Currently Yahoo! is creating an RSS directory of web sites that offer RSS feeds. By choosing RSS feeds your web site can also be included to this directory, free of cost.

By increasing subscribers to your RSS feeds you automatically increase your customer base and accordingly your sales. With RSS your company news, information, messages and ads can be syndicated all across the web and this increases the number of internet users you can reach out to.

RSS feeds can now also be delivered as webcasts and audio files can be sent to your subscribers directly. In fact not only can people hear them when they use their computer but it can in fact be downloaded to your mp3 player or ipod too.
