Amazon Kindle Digital Book, Magazine And Blog Reader

I got my Amazon Kindle Wednesday and I can honestly say that I am totally impressed? I can almost say that it is "Life Changing." I don't mean in the sense of a birth or death in the family, but in the sense that it is changing the way I learn and consume information and live my day.

For the last few years I have relied on Audio Books as my primary method of enjoying books. My patience and attention span has always been a bit short. I found it difficult to sit still and read a book. With Audio Books I can listen and do something else such as work at my computer or set outside my RV and enjoy the odd stogy and or cool one.

Since my Amazon Kindle arrived I am finding myself spending a lot of time reading, really reading and not in the sense that listening to an Audio Book is also called reading. Of course, I realize that there is the element of the Amazon Kindle being a new toy. And that once the newness wears off that I will drift back to my old ways. Perhaps so, and if that is the case I will update/revise this review and explain how that happened.

In the meantime I would like to share with you some of the awesome features, additional capabilities and enjoyment the Amazon Kindle gives me.

I have found myself enjoying reading again and in new and different ways. For example, I am in the process of reading 3 books at the same time. Of course, I don't mean exactly the same time but 3 books that I am in the process of reading. I am reading two books related to business on topics like, How To Start A Business and one all about Internet Affiliate Marketing. I am also reading a for fun book titled "The Best Time Travel Stories of the 20th Century."

Additionally, I have found the size and ease to use has made it so easy for me to just pick it up and read for 10 or 15 minutes then put it back down and an hour later pick it up and start again right where I left off in any book, newspaper article or blog that I was last reading. It is just so handy that I will be able to add it to my Batman Utility Belt of digital gadgets and where ever I am with time on my hands, even only a few minutes, and be able to read an article or a chapter in a book.

Of course some of this time I was previously spending listening to Audio Books. But that is Ok. In the end I am still learning. I will still have times with my Audio Books that can't be done with the Amazon Kindle. For example, while driving, the Audio Book or Podcast is the way to go. Or as often as not an Old Time Radio Program which is what I enjoy listening to the most.

One thing I have learned about starting and running a business. It is not what you do in one session but the accumulation of directed or focused mini sessions that you have allowed to accumulate that moves you toward a goal in the long run (Wow! That sounded prophetic! :) ). And anyone who is starting a business and does not plan everything around the long run is wasting their time.

Update: 06 Feb 2009

I have now had my Amazon Kindle for over six months and thought now would be a good time to share with you what I now feel about this wonderful device.

I take my Amazon Kindle with me everywhere except to bed where I still prefer to use my Ipod and listen to my Old Time Radio Programs as I fall off to  sleep.

I have some blogs that I read every morning and I have subscribed to a couple of different newspapers such as the WallStreet Journal and the Investors Business Daily. The Amazon Kindle is a great way to read periodicals. For me I have found that an ongoing subscription is a bit much because on some days I don't have the time to read them. So now I just download that days edition to whichever newspaper I feel like reading. My only complaint here is that the daily price is generally the same price as it is off the newsstand.  For some reason that price just doesn't seem right for a digital version so I don't do it often. By the way, USA Today is now one of the many newspapers that have been added.

As a Home-Based business owner I need to constantly be researching about web marketing and new online business trends and I have found an enormous amount of ebooks on how to start, run and succeed with an online business or online business opportunities. Which brings me to the book shopping feature of the Amazon Kindle. With just one click you are inside their online store and with a few keystrokes you can enter a search term and a whole list of books come up. After reviewing a few titles I decide which one I want and with one click the book is paid for and in less than a minute the new book is in my Kindle ready for me to read. The beauty of this is it works almost anywhere I am, setting in a coffee shop or standing in line at the grocery store.

I also must say something about the customer support. I have had two dealings with Amazons support, one when I first got the Kindle and it was more my lack of experience with it. Anyway I called them up and they put me right through to a tech guy who was very patient with me and helped me to get my SD card to work in the Kindle.  The other was just yesterday when I downloaded a book that had bad pictures in it. I used their online email support and within 2 hours they had evaluated the book and determined it did have a problem and had refunded my purchase price.

Lastly I want to say one thing about the handling of the Amazon Kindle. It overall is easy to handle but there are not a lot of places in which to grab hold of the device without accidently hitting one of the many paging buttons. I hope that when they make their next version they will add a few areas where you can just grasp and hold the Kindle.
